BASIC RIDER COURSE & EXPERIENCED RIDER COURSE

These training courses are for MAINE RESIDENTS ONLY who hold a valid operator's licence.
These training courses are designed to enhance your street survival skills by teaching the safety features
of riding a motorcycle. Motorcycles are provided for the BASIC COURSE only.










 


 


DRESS REQUIREMENTS: For both courses,students must wear a DOT or Snell approved
helmet, eye protection (goggles, glasses, or helmet face shield), a long-sleeved shirt or jacket,
long pants or sturdy material, over-the-ankle footwear with rubber soles, and full-fingered gloves
(leather boots and gloves are preferred). Rain gear (no poncho is recommended).

All tuition costs are refundable with proper notice, and DO NOT include the cost of a
Maine Motorcycle License.

Students must attend all sessions and complete all requirements set forth by the Motorcycle Safety
Foundation (MSF) in order to obtain a completion car. Successful completion of the written test qualifies
the beginner student for a motorcycle permit. Successful completion of the written test AND the skill
evaluation qualifies the beginner student for a waiver eliminating the State of Maine motorcycle road test.

BASIC RIDER COURSE

This 20-hour course teaches the basic skills needed to operate a motor cycle in traffic. The
first half of the course familiarizes each student with the location and operation of the controls.
Students then practice riding on 125cc and 250cc motorcycles to demonstrate they have the
strength, balance and coordination to perform straight-line riding, shifting, turning and exercises.

The second half of the course introduces students to street riding strategies needed when sharing
the road with other vehicles. Skills include emergency braking. swerving and proper cornering
techniques. All exercises are conducted on a protected range. Students will also be required to
take a written exam. Successful completion of these tests may qualify you for your motorcycle
endorsement on your driver's license. You may also qualify for an insurance discount (ask your agent).

The BASIC RIDER COURSE IS $275. This class runs weekends -
Friday evening 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm,
Saturday & Sunday 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
You must be at least 16 years old and possess the ability to balance a bicycle.
Parental permission and proof of Drivers Education completion will be required for any person under 18.

EXPERIENCED RIDERCOURSE®

The MSF's Experienced RiderCourse® (ERC) is held on Sundays from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. You
will start in the classroom learning street strategies and the art of "riding with control". Then you
will put this into practice with riding your own bike doing exercises that will hone your braking,
cornering, and swerving skills.

The EXPERIENCED RIDER COURSE IS $100.
This class is held on Sundays from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
ERC participants must be at least 16 years old, must possess a motorcycle endorsement on their
license, and have at least 3 months of recent riding experience. Participant's motorcycle used in
the ERC must be street-legal (i.e. registered, inspected, and insured) and will be subject to a
safety check before beginning the riding exercises.
